An abstract (in translation “abstract, summary, extraction”) is a summary that allows the reader to view a series of materials and select the information appropriate for his research task from the whole dissertation. Consequently, the abstract of the thesis as an accompanying publication should be independent in the semantic plan, although it is possible that it covers only a part of the written work offered to the reader. Also abstract write as part of a written assignment. Although the abstract is located in the first part of this assignment, it should be written last, after the work is completed. This scientific genre has recently become extremely popular. There is a danger of confusing it with annotation. Although it is not the same thing. So, we learn to write abstract.
There are a few general rules for writing it:
– place the abstract on a separate page immediately after the title page;
– in the center in capital letters, place the heading – ABSTRACT;
– write 50-300 words depending on the volume of the main written work. Abstract does not exceed 10 percent of the number of words in the main work;
– use a clear concise style, short sentences and keywords and phrases that can be quickly correlated with the main content and essence of the work.
5 steps in writing an abstract:
- indicate the scientific problem and the reason why it is being investigated;
- Identify the main components of the work and their characteristics. This may be research material, participants in the experiment (subjects), etc. depending on the area and level of scientific activity;
- give a brief overview of what has been done;
- indicate the main achieved result;
- Indicate what the results of the study.
Provide useful information. Unlike the introductory section, which you can intentionally make somewhat uncertain, the abstract should provide a clear explanation of your article and research. Formulate an abstract in such a way that the reader understands exactly what you mean. In the abstract there is no place for unclear and ambiguous phrases and formulations.
Try not to use direct abbreviations and abbreviations in the abstract, because they must be deciphered to make it clear to the reader. This takes up valuable writing space, which should be avoided. If your topic is well known, you can refer to the people and places where your research is focused. Do not include tables, figures, descriptions of sources used and long quotes in the dissertation abstract. These elements take up a lot of space and are not needed in the abstract.
